Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Pre-trial Litigation

Please Help! About 2 years ago i rear-ended a company vehicle while driving my sister's car. She did not have insurance and the company claimed it on theirs. The company sent me a letter regarding collection of damages back in 2004. I agreed to it over the phone w/ one of their reps. That was the last I heard of them until about a week ago when i got a letter regarding a court date to seek damages the insurance company is trying to collect. I do not understand why they would involve the courts regarding this matter when it could be solved out of court. There was little attempt to collect anything & there was only a verbal agreement..I did not sign any contract regarding the damages. I would have fulfilled my obligation if i did. What are my options for this? Now not only do i have to pay for the damaged vehicle but no also court costs as well as attorney fees! ANY info is gladly appreciated & god bless you for any advice that you may have.
