Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I recieved a message on my phone that was quiet disturbing. The message said " This is Crystal Smith you were named listed to know my mother(whom I will not mention her name).and to call her immidetly requarding a check fraud and left a number. Govern yourself accoordingly and good luck".

I am not sure what to do. My first thought is this is a scam. They did not leave a company name or an attorney's office name. When I called back the number all it says was a diffrent name and leave a message. I was going to try and call tomorrow. Please give me a direction to go.

You're right--this sounds like a scam.

When you receive messages or calls like this, and suspect "scam", call the number and, and ask for the legal name and address (not a PO Box number) of the company contacting you. If the caller is unwilling to share this information, it is most likely a scam--a legitimate debt collector would willingly disclose this information, and in fact would HAVE to disclose this information if and when they intended to file a lawsuit against you.

If you are given a company name and legal address, do some research of your own (easy to do these days on the internet) and see what you can dig up.

If you find that the call is a scam, don't lose sleep over it. If the calls are repetitive, you have the option of contacting a local consumer attorney and discussing your situation.
