Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Residential Electric Bill Dispute with FPL (Florida Power and Light)

We purchased a home in Florida and moved in during May, 2005. Our electric company has always been FPL (Florida Power and Light). I recently received an invoice from FPL for $4,000.00! I called FPL to question the extremely high amount and they advised that the outside electric meter was tampered with and it was not reading the correct usage for approx. 2 years. They estimated the average usage it ''should have been'' during that time frame and charged me for the difference from what I had paid, against what they had estimated it should have been. I did NOT tamper with my meter. It must have been the previous owner. Am I liable for any of this $4k payment?

If they can document their claim, yes.

Ask them the procedure for contesting, so they do not turn off the electric. You may have to pay up front and then seek reimbursement. You may be able to negotiate a settlement, since it was their error.

You are probably liable if more electric was used than was billed for. You should request Florida Power & Light Co. to come out to your home and investigate thoroughly. Speak with management. If there was an error in the billing, you should only be responsible for the amount used during your ownership and not the prior owner. You can probably negotiate some reduced amount or payment terms which might be more favorable to you.
