If you lease a computer and fail to pay most of it, and it shows up on your credit as written off, are you legally responsible to turn the computer back in?

Yes, you must turn the computer in. If you fail to do so, you will be responsible for all sorts of penalties and fees as well as possible criminal action. In addition, the leasing company can charge you with civil theft which can amount to an award for treble damages plus court costs and attorney's fees.
