Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Small Claims suit?for $1,100.00

I was given money by a friend, who offered it to me. for personal reason's. I offered to pay back half($550.00) of it anyway. The person said ''Don't worry about it''. I still wrot on a piece of paper that I would pay it back. When the time came , I called the person who was angry that our ''relationship'' ended, and ask did he want me to send it to him because I didn't want to see him anymore. He said he didn't want it and wouldn't stay on that subject. I eventually got frustrated and hung up. I found ou that this person is now suing me for the whole total. I am disabled and do not work and I am in the begining of filing for Chapter 7 Bankrupcy. Do I have to go to this court meeting? what are the laws pretaining to people who do this kind of thingsto be spiteful. I am unable to go to court. What can I do?
