Stolen payment check

In February I made a payment via check to a used car dealer from whom I had purchased a vehicle. Payment was made in person. Three days later the business was burglarized and my check was amongst others srolen. I was advised via phone on that day and asked to replace the check. Am I legally obliged to do so?
