If the lawsuit is a typical debt collection procedure, the complaint received with
the summons will explain the lawsuit, the objective of the creditor, the reason for
the debt, the failure to pay the debt, the amount, interest, and penalties as well
as legal costs, and ask the court to issue a judgment finding you liable for the
debt. Using the court order, the creditor can then garnish, levy, or attach your
paycheck, bank account, personal property, and other assets in order to collect
the debt. Your need is to defend yourself against the actions of the creditor.
