can the electric company hold family member responsible for deceased mothers electric bill?

While it is not generally the case, I suppose there are some possible theories as to how a family member can become liable for a decedent's electric bill. The general rule is that we are all only responsible for the bills that we contract for.

That being said, if the surviving family member was joint (co-signer) on the bill, then that would attach liability. Some more obscure arguments could be the scenario where the family member lives in the house after the decedent dies and the bill is for service after the death, then it could be possible. Other arguments would be more obscure than that.
