Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I wrote a check for work a tree service did at my home. I later discovered that they had damaged my property during the work and stopped payment on the check. In the meantime, the contractor took the check to a check-cashing store, which cashed the check. Now the check-cashing store is harrassing me for payment. Who is responsible for making good?
