Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

Altered Florida Tag (license plate)

I was recently sitting in my car in a Publix parking lot. An officer approached my car and issued a ''criminal citation for altering a tag. He removed my tag for evidence and damaged my car in the process. The alteration he cited me for was a small 1'' back-up camera mounted in the center of the tag, but not interfering with any markings on the tag. Also, this was done by a shop in Calif. I have to go to court Monday, what should I do? Thank you in advance for your help.

I am unaware that a backup camera would be considered an alteration of the tag. You should consider hiring a traffic attorney who is familiar with the traffic laws to represent you in court. If you don't, you should explain to the court, that you were unaware of the prohibition of a camera on the tag and that they are sold in stores throughout the state. Regardless, the camera has now been removed and no harm has been done. Most judges in Miami-Dade County would assess minimal court costs and dismiss the citation.
