I was arrested Sat on charges of possession of paraphernalia in my parked vehicle. I am due to appear in court 18 May and desperately need advice on what is next and a good attorney.

Your upcoming court date is an arraignment. If you hire an attorney, neither you nor your attorney need appear. If not, then you must appear or a warrant would likely be issued. What you should do for now is contact attorneys to discuss the facts of case. Consider the attorney's appearant knowledge and your comfort level with them.
I agree with Ms. Horween. Call or research attorneys to find one that would be good for you. You need to call an attorney in the area where you got the charge because they know the judges and prosecutors better than anyone. I'm in the Tampa Bay area, for example, so feel free to contact me if you need assistance here.
