If you are not happy with your lawyer, you are of course free to retain another lawyer in whom you have more confidence. If, however, the attorney is appointed because you cannot afford a lawyer, you cannot select which attorney you are appointed. In other words, if you have a public defender, you must either be represented by that attorney, or go hire another one.

If you do want to switch attorneys, it is a fairly easy thing to do. Your new attorney simply needs to file a substitution of counsel, signed by both your new and former attorneys.
