Battery charges "hold such a stiff sentence" because the Florida legislature apparently believes that the unlawful striking of another should bear a severe penalty. It is not the defendant's responsibility to prove innocence, rather the State Attorney's office has to prove the guilt beyond any reasonable doubt. Your job - or your attorney's is to cast doubt on your being guilty.
