Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
Blackmail and Extortion
I am breaking up with my girlfriend of a little over a year. Everytime we had a fight she would say that she was going to send my private pictures to my boss and other business contacts. The pictures were explicit in a legal way sent to her in confidence. She also went through my computer and took out my contacts so she would have someone to send them to.
Now that we have broken up, we are both on the lease at our appartment. She refuses/is unable to pay. I have said I would pay the rent through the end of the lease (three months)
While we were together I told her I would help her with an old credit card bill of hers and her tax bill.
Now we are broken up and she is threatening to show the pictures to my boss and to my judge from my divorce to get me fired and restrict my time with my son. I know I am liable for the rent, but what about the other? What should I do?

You are not obligated to help her with her bills. You must handle the rent because you are under contract. Talk to your leasing office about the situation and tell them you want to break the lease. They may make you pay 2 months to break it and make her sign a new lease if she wants to remain there. I would also go to the police and report her attempts to blackmail you. If you feel comfortable, I would also give my boss a heads up.
