Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
I bonded out someone and now he has fled
I bonded out a person at the end of last year, I took him to the court date that was scheduled and they dropped his felony and ordered him to pay a fee by the end of january. Since that court date he moved back to NY and I didnt know, and now the bonds lady said that I have to pay the money or turn him in. I do not know how to contact him, nor do I have he money. I am uneployed and receive state assistance. She said that I was a liar, and left a horrible message on my phone. She also stated to me that she was going to report me to HRS and have my children taken away and I will be sentenced to prison for two years. I don't know what to do and really need help.

Re: I bonded out someone and now he has fled
It is illegal for anyone to use criminal prosecution as a way to get someone to pay a debt. It is considered extortion if the police get involved. If your friend's case was resolved and sentence entered, the bond should be discharged and you no longer at risk. Otherwise, you may still be liable for the money. Either way, the conduct of the bondsman is unacceptable.
