Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

I have been charged with introduction of contraband into a state correctional facility, along with felony possession and 2 other 3rd degree felonies. I have never been in trouble before and there are a lot of issues with my whole situation that my public deffender will not even discuss with me. The State is trying to offer me jail or prison time. I was assigned to the wrong Public Deffender at first and she said I should not get any more than probation with my lack of a past record and my current points. I do not think my PD now is actually trying to do anything for me, I can't even get him on the phone most of the time and I live 7 hours from his office in Panama City Beach. I do not know what I should do. He says if I can find other cases in the same county with my charges that did not get jail time that he can possibly use that, but I thought he was the attorney and I did not realize that I should be doing my own legal research. I do not have a lot of money, I am a single mother. What should I do?

You could call the ofice and ask to speak to the attorney's supervisor or writ a letter of your concerns directly to the public Defender. You could ask the judge to fire your public defender and appoint another counsel. You could hire your own attorney. At any rate, you should document your concerns and what you have done.
