Can a defendant or their family write a letter to the State or Assistant State Attorney?

Of course, but I advise the defendant to never do so. Any statements he makes can he used against him. Also, it is of little use for the family to do so, because the state doesn't care much about the accused. It is better that the defendant and the family restrict their communications to their defense attorney.
