Can he be assigned a public defender before court date

It depends on whether or not he qualifies for appointment of a public defender.

The Public Defender is usually assigned at the Arraignment date for Misd. cases and the initial appearance for Felony cases, not before.

He will be assigned a pd at first appearance but he probably won't get assigned a permananr one until court
