A public defender will be appointed for you if you qualify and the State is seeking jail time. If not, then you will not get the services of a public defender.

You are allowed to call the state attorney and try to speak with the assistant assigned to your case. This is often difficult for attorneys and even harder for lay persons. You can ask for a diversionary program but there is not guarantee that one will be offered.
