Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
Extortion
Is it legal for a company to demand a former employee to pay them $10,000.00 by a certain date or they will press charges for embezzlement when the employee admitted that they lost $5000.00 of company money due to negligence on their part. The employee brought the night deposit home and it was stolen at an acquaintance's house. This was admitted after the employee was laid off. Then the CEO threatened the employee to come up with double the money or they would press charges.

Re: Extortion
It does not sound like what the company is doing is legal. That is, likely, extortion.
