Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

False Accusation by business partner

I recently lent someone money and was promised a return for doing so. I also introduced that same person to a shipping co. The person has refused to pay me because he indicates that the shipping co. that I introduced him to has lost his cargo. When I asked for my funds he indicated that he felt that I was involved with the missing cargo and was going to file a report against me stating that I stole this cargo. Should I even be concered since these allegations are entirely false? If he files a false report against me is there anything I can do to protect myself? I have a worthless check from him, should I proceed to sue him for this?

Re: False Accusation by business partner

If someone accuses you of a criminal offense and also informs you that they are going to file charges - you need to take it seriously. Law enforcement will react to a sworn statement even when it is false so long as they do not know that it is false. If his sworn statement fulfills the elements of a felony you could be arrested. Gather all evidence that will show he is lying and keep it. Be prepared in case you are charged.
