what is a retainer? and how much of a fee must a
client give up front to a attorney after he has gave the the amount?

A retainer is the sum of money that the attorney requires to be paid up front in order to represent a party in a legal matter. In criminal law, it is often the full amount of the fee being required. All of the retainer is paid before any work is begun.
The amount of the retainer and the fee is subject to negotiations between an attorney and his prospective client.
