There's a wide array of possibilities in your Father-in-law's situation, based on what he is ultimately charged with by the State. If he is charged with Burglary of a Dwelling with an Assault or Battery Therein, which is a life offense, he will score mandatory prison and faces up to life in prison. If they charge him with Burglary of a Dwelling, but do not ad the enhancement for Assault or Battery Therein, he's charged with a felony of the second degree, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and scoring a minimum of roughly 16 months in prison. The Battery/Domestic Violence alleging strangulation is a felony of the third degree, punishable by up to five years in prison and requiring a minimal jail sentence if convicted.
These are very serious charges. I would encourage him to retain counsel as soon as possible.
