Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

florida state:possession of a fire arm by a felon...with no criminal intent

my question is regarding a friend.

He is a convicted felon, served his time and has been free from sentence and or parole/probation since 2003, he was found in florida in possession of a fire arm, with no criminal intent. He was sitting on a porch with a holstered gun. I am not completely sure of the details, but he was arrested, and let out on bond, as of now there is no court date set. He is trying to get his ''ducks in a row'' and asked me to research this charge. I have looked on several sites and find conflicting information. Please help in any way possible thank you

He is facing a mandatory three years in jail. There are no good defenses to the charge.
