florida's supervise release statue.

i was sentenced in 1991 to 25 yrs in the state court of florida. at that time i wasnt sentenced to supervised release. now upon my release in 2008. i come to find out that i will be on supervised release until 2016. i am yold that the supervised release statue which was passed in 1994 was made retroactive. i would like to know how is that so when i was sentenced years before that statue was passed.

Since you did not actually serve 25 years in prison, the Department of Corrections can put conditions on your early release. You were released early, but you are still obligated to report to them and are on parole. That is the reason your supervised release will end in 2016, 25 years after your conviction.

If you violate that parole somehow, either with a new crime or in some other manner, they have the option of taking you back into custody and making you serve the remainder of your original 25 year sentence. The actual amount of time you serve and conditions of your incarceration are always up to the Dept. of Corrections after you are sentenced by the Court.
