if i found a laptop computer in a gas station that was lost and picked it up and kept it am i guilty of theft

It depends on the circumstances of "found" the laptop. It also depends on if you knew whose property it was. Most importantly, it depends on your intent. If you had the intent to either temporarily or permanently deprive the property of another,it's a theft.
