Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

I am sure that my future sister-in-law stole a diamond ring from me when I let her stay at my house and she most likely pawned it. I have no proof so I have not yet filed a police report but no pawnshops will tell me if they have it until after I make the report. Can I make a police report or do anything without proof? She has been in trouble for jewelery theft before.

You have every right to file a report regarding your missing diamond ring, regardless of whether or not your future sister-in-law stole the ring. The issue of whether she ultimately stole the ring is something that perhaps can be determined through the course of law enforcement's investigation into the case. It's not a prerequisite that you know the identity of the theif before reporting a theft, but I would be sure that you are certain that it was in fact stolen and not misplaced before filing the report. Once it's filed, you can also contact your insurance carrier and make a claim, assuming that you have it protected under your home ower's insurance policy and have documentation regarding its value.
