Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

I hired a contractor to do work on my fathers house. I gave him cash deposit and signed contract. He was to come back the next day before I left town to have the work down. He did not show and made excuses. I became suspicious and found he was not licensed and could not even pull permits for the house. He also had complaints against him. I asked for my deposit back the next morning ($1500). He agreed but I got more run around. I filed a report with the police and he told the police he would meet me and pay me. He never showed. I want to follow through with filing charges but I fear retaliation against my fathers home so I'd rather wait until he moves with me in a few months. I have the bogus contract, the receipts he gave me and I have texts saying he will pay me and then never does. I know I will probably never see my money but I want to make sure he stops what he is doing. He has a criminal history of doing this to others. How long do I have to file charges? This happened in Florida.

You must understand that only the prosecutor can file charges. Not you. You can sue this person of course in which case I would suggest you get an attorney. If you want criminal charges to be filed you need to follow up with the police and the prosecutor so that they can file charges against this person and you can receive restitution.
