A warrant can be limited in extent, meaning that it could be a "Florida only" warrant or a United States warrant. So leaving the state may have gotten him out of harms way until he returns.

You friend has, unfortunately, been told a falsehood. The warrant will remain outstanding until it is addressed by having your friend in front of a judge. Before that happens he is running a risk of spending a lot of days in jail waiting for "his day in court" after the warrant is executed. Your friend needs to take responsibility of himself and face the charges he is accused of. Running will only delay the inevitable and make a judge less "friendly" to his plight.

If he is on probation as a juvenile different laws apply however once he turns 18 his exposure to contempt of court charge rises from 5 to 180 days in jail.

Unfortunately, your friend has been wrongly advised. Absent a very rare filing or computer error, the warrant will last practically forever, leaving him open to being jailed at any chance police contact. He needs to contact an attorney, to "quash the warrant" and attempt to negotiate a resolution to his problem.
