what is the legal definition of detained? Is it the same as escape?

No, but if you are detained, you can commit escape. Detained means the officer has arrested you and you are not free to leave. If you leave, you may be charged with escape. Temporary detentions, such as at a traffic stop do not count, or where the officer has just stopped you or taken you in. But detention means you are being held. Escape means you have left that detention without authority.
