is it legal to own a demilliturised machine gun from ww11 by a convicted felon?

The law considers it a firearm if it is usable or can readily be made usable. However the interpretation of what readily can be made usable means is pretty liberal. If it has been rendered inoperable and would take highly specialized skills to repair it then you are probably ok.
As others have said if it is inoperable, and can not be reasonably easy to make operable, then it might pass muster. That said, you're taking a huge chance. Even if it turns out to be inoperable, I doubt the police are going to take your word for it. In other words, they could arrest and ask questions later. Meanwhile, you're in custody merely because you thought that you MIGHT be Ok. Why risk it?
