Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
legal length a case stays open
After a person has been found to have not committed a crime by the investigating officers and the officers have told the person's lawyer the case is not going anywhere but that they want to hang on to the case just incase the person does something later and we than want to bring it up again. It seems to me as a threat. What rights does the person have to defend himself and not have to live in fear of making some small mistake like maybe a traffic violation and then the authorities want to make an issue out of the other case. Can a case truly lay dormant and then be opened at an law officer's whim?

The police can sit on it as long as the statute of limitations.
