Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

Can no longer afford attorney's fees

I was recently convicted of two federal narcotics charges in South Florida. I initially secured a private criminal attorney and was represented throughout the entire process. However, I can no longer afford the firm's fees. I am supposed to surrender myself in November to begin my 3 year sentence. However, I anticipate a sentence reduction before that time due to some external circumstances. Although I am still in need of a lawyer, I can not afford the exorbitant hourly rates anymore (I am current in all of my fee payments). I tried contacting my local public defender's office for assistance. Unfortunately, I was told that they will not represent me at this stage in the process. What can I do?

Re: Can no longer afford attorney's fees

I know some very good attorneys who handle federal criminal defense in South Florida and can likely do it relatively inexpensively. If you would like some names, please feel free to contact me.

Contact your current attorney and let him know your current circumstances regarding payment of fees. If you in fact do need a PD you will have to be found qualified by the judge. Your current attorney should be able to help you with that. Good Luck
