Re: paralegals

This is a very broad question and could take a lot of time to give specific reasons. I'll give a general answer. Basically, thes people are the office's support staff. The office could not operate without them. A law office provides documents for clients, legal advice and goes to trial when necessary. The lawyer often prepares pleadings for the court. Your office staff may prepare these from the lawyer's dictation or notes. Sometimes, if the person is experienced, the lawyer just gives the file to the staff member and he or she already knows what to do. A person like that is invaluable.

A law office deals with preparation or reviewing of substantial numbers of documents. These documents need to be organized on the computers and files need to be kept in an organized manner.

Lawyers need staff to schedule events on the calendars. this entails client conferences, deadlines, depositions, court hearings, etc.

If the lawyer handles trials, he/she needs staff to help with weeks or months of preparation. At the same time you are preparing a trial, you have to keep handling other clients' matters.

'Hope this helped. Tom Rosenblum, Jacksonville, Fla.
