Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
petty-theft
I just got charged for shop lifting misdemeanor for the first time. I would like to know if probation is a possibility and how much the fine could be. It was only $250 worth of merchandise they found, but this the first offense. I'm willing to triple community service hours so I don't have to pay for a fine.

Re: petty-theft
Probation is common for first-time misdemeanors. You may even get less. Ask your prosecutor about diversion, which is a type of probation where, if successfully completed, the charges are completely dismissed. You should be able to buy out your fine at $10 per community service hour.
