A plea in absentia refers to when a defendant accepts a plea bargain, either guilty or no contest, without physically coming back to court. They have a signed and notarized plea form and are sentenced even though they are absent. This is done for defendants who live somewhere else than where the court is. This affects a person's criminal record the same as if they took the plea bargain in person.
