Can you be forced by police to take a polygraph?

No, you can not be forced to give any statement against yourself. If law enforcement is demanding that the subject of an investigation make any statement, that person should refuse to make any statement, and obtain an attorney.
Remember that any time you speak to law enforcement, what you say will be used against you. The subject of an investigation will rarely talk their way out of the investigation...they normally anly make matters worse.
