As you probably know at this point, you can get arrested. Now whether you can get convicted may be another story. It comes down to your intent when passed the point of purchase, although that magical line is not what determines a theft. In fact, you don't have to pass a certain point, but that is often used in order to make their case stronger. Let's say, for example, you hide a CD in your pocket, but you never leave the store. The store has no obligation to wait until you attempt to leave and can stop you immediately where you stand. To answer your likely question about what can happen now, you are looking at a felony petit theft and you face up to 5 years prison. Talk to an attorney immediately in order to fight this charge.
