When stopped by the police, are they allowed to
ask you if you are a homosexual?

In general, police can ASK you anything. The law protects your right to REFUSE to answer and in some cases excludes your answer when circumstances indicate police violated your rights. In your example, they can ask and you can refuse to speak. In that case the police cannot (legally) go any further - the classic Mexican standoff.
