The offense is a crime of moral terpitude, and even though it is class C misdemeanor, and punishable by fine only it is my belief you need to hire a criminal attorney. A final conviction can keep from acquiring an apartment, job, or college. Please remember the question on most applications is "have you ever been convicted of a felony or a crime of moral terpitude?"

First, shoplifting is NOT a crime of moral terpitude in Florida. Based on the amount of the theft, it is a misdemeanor. While you would be better with an attorney, you may be able to handle this on your own. If this is your first offense, the State will probably offer to place you in a pretrial diversionary program. Normally, this would be the best outcome because if you successfully complete the program, the charges are dropped. You used a Texas address however, so this may not be a viable option for you. You will not be offered a public defender, so if you want representation, then you will have to retain an attorney.
