can my son talk to a pro bono lawyer
about his case

He can talk to any lawyer. The only restriction might be if he presently has a lawyer, then whoever the new lawyer is you're talking to can't really give advice since he is already being represented and only by hiring the new lawyer can that new lawyer properly give advice.
