What is a status hearing?

It is a case management conference (i.e.- an informal hearing) where the Judge ask both attorneys the status of the case; what pending issues remain to be resolved; what can be done to expedite resolution of these issues; when the case will be ready for trial; etc. It is basically for the Judge to find out where the case is and what remains to be done.
