Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida
My step son is facing felony charges for drugs but has also shown an interest in joining the coast guard. Will a felony charge keep him out of the military?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Many times, a felony conviction can keep someone from joining the military and/or getting the job of their choosing or going to a college and/or grad school of their choice.
You should meet with a local criminal defense attorney in your area to see if your step son's charges can be reduced (or even dismissed). If not, your step son may be eligible for the State's Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) program, which is a good program for first time offenders by which the charge can be dismissed (upon successful completion of the program).
If you or your step son have any specific questions about his case, my office would be more than happy to provide a free consultation to review his case and determine what his best option is.
We handle drug cases throughout the Tampa Bay area and I was a prosecutor for about six years in the Pinellas County State Attorney's Office -- so I can give you a good idea of how things are going to proceed from this point.
Good luck.
