Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

Stolen property in car dealership

Hi, I took my car to be appraised for a trade-in at a local dealership and when I got my car back my iphone was missing out of it. There are no disclaimers posted about them not being responsible for lost or stolen items in their property, also when they asked for my car keys I was inside the office, and they told me they didn't need to drive it. I made a police report and is under investigation. The owner of the dealership said he is not responsible, and now I am in the hole for 600.00 dollars. Is there anything that I can do???

If you do not agree, then stop right here, and do not read any further.

First, you should never leave small items in a car whenever you give custody to another for any purpose including valet parking, repairs, and the like. You have obviously filed a police report and the police will decide if criminal charges will be filed against anyone.

If the dealership refuses any responsibility for the incident, you can seek civil damages in the small claims or summary procedure court. You can get forms from the court and file on your own without an attorney. You will have to determine who owns the dealership (corporation?) and sue that entity.
