Almost all civil cases (including divorces) and criminal cases have some form of discovery (investigation of the other side's case) which is almost automatic. In civil cases, it usually involves Requests for Production, Interrogatories, and Depositions. In divorces, it's called Mandatory Disclosure. In criminal cases, it's called 3.220 discovery. The amount of discovery is limited by supreme court rules. If more investigation is needed beyond that allowed by the rules, such as more Interrogatories or more Production, it's called Supplemental Discovery.
