Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

Theft of diamond ring

I had workers at my home doing repairs. My diamond engagement ring is missing. Only one worker had been in the house that day. I questioned him and, of course, he denied taking it. I talked to his boss who was outside working in the garage area and he also questioned him with the same response. I called the Sheriff's department and they came and wrote up a report but said there wasn't much they could do. What can I do? I know he took it. I had worn the ring the night before. The wedding band was still on the holder....just the engagement ring was missing. No one had been in my house since I took them off the night before except for my family and this worker. I want my ring back. I don't want this to happen to any future families either. If he takes this and gets away with it he'll just continue to take things from his next jobs. Please advise what I should do. Thanks!

Re: Theft of diamond ring

There are two kinds of evidence in a criminal case. Direct evidence is fingerprint, DNA, or a video of the crime. You have none of that. Then there is circumstantial evidence. This is exactly what you have here. The ring was there, only one person went in and left the room, and then it was gone. While more difficult than cases with direct evidence, a case can be won on circumstantial evidence alone.

If the police are not doing anything, you can go directly to the State Attorneys Office and make a report. They may or may not do more than the police have done.

Re: Theft of diamond ring

Unfortunately you have no proof that he took the ring. There is nothing you can do, hopefully you have insurance.
