traffic violation and searches

If while driving one is pulled over by a local police department for a traffic violation, does the officer have the right to search the vehicle?

Maybe. There are many factors which must be taken into consideration so it is hard to give a yes or no answer. It would depend if there was probable cause or a strong suspicion of the presence of an illegal substance.

Not without permission or probable cause to believe drugs or contraband is present in the car-like smelling marijuana smoke.
