Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

truck rental company privacy violation

I recently left my spouse and just found out he paid the employee at that company twenty dollars to tell him what city I was returning the truck to. I asked when I got the truck about not giving info to exspouse about me or where i was going and was assured they do not disclose infor to anyone to protect their clients. can i sue that company?

NOTE: This communication is not intended as and should not be interpreted as legal advice. Rather, it is intended solely as a general discussion of legal principles. You should not rely on or take action based on this communication without first presenting ALL relevant details to a competent attorney in your jurisdiction and then receiving the attorney's individualized advice for you. By reading the "Response" to your question or comment, you agree that the opinion expressed is not intended to, nor does it, create any attorney-client relationship, nor does it constitute legal advice to any person reviewing such information, nor will it be considered an attorney-client privileged communication. If you do not agree, then stop right here, and do not read any further.

If there was a violation, it is a civil issue, not criminal. Nonetheless, you can sue anyone. The real question is what will happen if you do?

Have you been damaged as a result of the company's slip of the tongue? Probably not. In today's age, it is relatively simple to find out the same information elsewhere either from your credit card bills, online databases, admissions in court, and the like. You will have to prove damages in order to collect anything in court which may be difficult to do.
