Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Florida

Sexual discrimination

The fire chief in my home town has refused to allow any women or people of color on his fire department. I am a career firefighter/emt with a paid department, but being female I'm not allowed on his volunteer department. I have more training and education in the field of firefighting than the chief himself. Since this is a volunteer department(funded by the city) do I have any legal ground for a formal complaint.

Re: Sexual discrimination

What you are discribing may not be employment discrimination because you have volunteer firefighters and not paid employee firefighters. That said, I assume there is some public funding of the department and the actions of this firechief could create other legal problems for your home town. I am not sure what you mean by "formal complaint" and if your goal is to bring a lawsuit in court or institute some complaint procedure within your local government. There is a possibility you could take either road. Good luck.
