Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Florida

Slander

I was recently fired from my job as preschool teacher at my son's school. When I took the job I told the director that I was in graduate school and she agreed to work around my schedule. When it came closer to my starting the semester in which I'd have to take some morning classes she told me that they weren't going to work around my schedule, that they would give me a couple of subbing opportunities during the summer.I told her I wouldn't be able to live on that and at this point she flew into a tirade accusing me of being vindictive, telling me she never should've hired me, that no one at the school liked me and that I should pull my son out of the school since there isn't any trust between us anymore. When I became upset and started crying she told me to leave. Please keep in mind that my son has been at this particular school since he was two. He is now 4 1/2.Another teacher told me that this director will not give me a letter of recommendation or a good reference which will hurt my ability to get hired on at the school board and thwart my ability to provide for my family. Can she do this? She is also threatening to call the school board ahead of me applying and warn them against hiring me.Is this slander? What should I do?

Re: Slander

I have a few questions for you to further explore this. You mentioned the school board. Is this a private or public school? Which county is this in?

At this point, we do not know what is being said, if anything, and for that reason it is difficult to determine whether it is slander. For example, if they say that during your work at the school you were unwilling/unable to work in the morning, this might not be defamation. So, maybe it is premature at this point, but I will have more to share depending on your answers. If you prefer, you may e-mail me privately at [email protected].
